New York comes to A.C. Il Mulino makes move from NYC to the Taj Mahal

If you want a reservation at Il Mulino New York - the original one on West 3rd Street in Manhattan - you better be an early planner. Even if you know someone, including the owner, it may not help.

"It's really flattering how popular our restaurant in Manhattan is," says Jerry Katzoff, chairman and owner of Il Mulino U.S.A. "It's just impossible to get in. Even when my friends call me, I sometimes have to say 'no' to them. And I hate saying 'no' to people. Here's how crazy it is: I'm eating there tonight, and they just called me to confirm that I'm really coming."

Katzoff is hoping that popularity will be equaled at Il Mulino New York, as well as its sister Trattoria Il Mulino, at Atlantic City's Trump Taj Mahal Casino and Resort, which opened in the summer.

Early signs are showing that it certainly will. Both restaurants have exceeded expectations despite a poor economy and city-wide casino slump. A recent Friday night was bustling with activity, and some diners are claiming that it is immediately one of the best - if not the best - Italian gourmet restaurant in the city. That's high praise for a restaurant that has only been open for a few months. More
