Band of the Week: Girl Talk
Published: Nov 26, 2008

You may know Gregg Gillis as Girl Talk, but whatever you do, don't know him as a DJ. Though Gillis admits he doesn't "hate it" when people refer to him as a DJ, he just would rather you acknowledge his musical art as a song manipulator rather than just merely playing them in a specified sequence.

"I understand DJ is the easier thing for people to associate me with," Gillis says. "But I consider myself a producer; I more or less manipulate old songs to make new songs. Because of that, I've always felt different than the traditional DJ."

His live show is also something far removed from watching your average DJ spin.

"It's basically me with the computers and live sample triggering," Gillis explains. "It's somewhere in between a concert and a party. It's not your traditional DJ set. The music is pretty exhaustive; it's more like a concert performance. It has a very distinct beginning and end, and I think people try their hardest to lose their minds in that time span." More
