It's not just any Monday for a seal named "Ocean"
By BEN LEACH Staff Writer, 609-272-7261
Published: Dec 01, 2008
3:24 p.m. Update - A seal that stranded in Ocean City in October has been rehabilitated and was released Monday morning along the Great Bay in Little Egg Harbor.

The nine-month-old harbor seal nicknamed "Ocean" was taken in by the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine. The young seal was found dehydrated. It usually gets its freshwater intake from fish.

A tracking device, secured to the seal’s fur with an epoxy-like substance, is expected to stay with the seal for the next 100 days as it finds its way back to its home somewhere north of New Jersey.

Eventually, the seal's progress will be tracked and available at: www.marinemammalstrandingcenter.org More

Groups target community problems

One of four billboards that target drinking, drug abuse or domestic violence stands on Route 9 in Eagleswood Township. Officials and students dedicated the signs Monday. The four billboards were a result of a community effort involving Pinelands Regional High School and Junior High School students, municipal alliance officials, businesses and elected officials. The Eagleswood, Little Egg Harbor and Tuckerton Municipal Alliance spearheaded the billboard project. Students created the initial designs for the messages and local businesses donated land for the signs. More than 3,500 teens are killed and another 85,000 injured each year in car crashes involving alcohol, according to the alliance. Not all have been drinking, some are passengers or innocent victims of people who drink and drive.
